“I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that His justice cannot sleep forever." – Thomas Jefferson, 1871

"It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religions, but on the gospel of Jesus Christ. For that reason alone, people of other faiths have been afforded freedom of worship here." – Patrick Henry

Lord, help me to relax.

Take from me the tension that makes people impossible.

Take from me the fears that do not allow me to venture.

Take from me the worries that blind my sight.

Take from me the distress that hides your joy.

Help me to know that I am with you, that I am in your care,

that I am in your love, that you and I are one.

CALL TO WORSHIP:  Adapted from PsalM 33

Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,
blessed is the people God chose for an inheritance.
From heaven the Lord looks down and sees all humanity;
    from the Lord’s dwelling place

God watches all who live on earth.
No nation is saved by the size of an army;
despite all its great strength it cannot save.
But the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear God,
on those whose hope is in God’s unfailing love.
In God our hearts rejoice,

for we trust in the holy name of our Lord.
May God’s unfailing love rest upon us,

for we put our hope in you.

SCRIPTURE: psalm 33:8-22

8Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.

9For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm.

10The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; he frustrates the plans of the peoples.

11The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.

12Happy is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people whom he has chosen as his heritage.

13The Lord looks down from heaven; he sees all humankind.

14From where he sits enthroned he watches all the inhabitants of the earth—

15he who fashions the hearts of them all, and observes all their deeds.

16A king is not saved by his great army; a warrior is not delivered by his great strength.

17The war horse is a vain hope for victory, and by its great might it cannot save.

18Truly the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his steadfast love,

19to deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine.

20Our soul waits for the Lord; he is our help and shield.

21Our heart is glad in him, because we trust in his holy name.

22Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us, even as we hope in you.

Morning Prayer

What a weekend it is, Lord! It is time to gather and celebrate, time to reflect on the blessings of the freedoms that have been fought for and won, a time to commit ourselves to offering the freedoms we cherish to others.

Give to the people of our country a zeal for justice and the strength that we may use our liberty in accordance with your gracious will. We have gathered here in the midst of the busyness of the summer season to seek your will, to find peace and directions for our lives. Bless us, O Lord, with wisdom tempered with compassion. Remind us that we have such freedom because others who have gone before have stood for principles of hope. Do not let our pride of country overwhelm the needs that still abound within our walls and our land. Where there is hatred, help us to bring your words of love. Where there are injustices, help us to correct unjust systems and become advocates for the voiceless and powerless. Where there is apathy, empower us to bring the good news of your gracious transforming love. Be close to our president and our national and state leaders, give them vision and courage, as they ponder decisions regarding the Covid crisis. Work through the scientists to provide treatments and effective vaccines. Be with us this day and all our days as we seek to follow you. And most gracious Lord, bless our nation and help us to honor you as citizens of this land. In Jesus’ Name, we pray as he taught us…

Our Father, which art in heaven,

Hallowed be thy Name.  Thy Kingdom come.

Thy will be done in earth, As it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, As we

forgive them that trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, But

deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, The power, and

the glory, For ever and ever. Amen.

Habakkuk 2:1-5

2I will stand at my watchpost, and station myself on the rampart; I will keep watch to see what he will say to me, and what he will answer concerning my complaint. 2Then the Lord answered me and said: Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so that a runner may read it. 3For there is still a vision for the appointed time; it speaks of the end, and does not lie. If it seems to tarry, wait for it; it will surely come, it will not delay. 4Look at the proud! Their spirit is not right in them, but the righteous live by their faith. 5Moreover, wealth is treacherous; the arrogant do not endure. They open their throats wide as Sheol; like Death they never have enough. They gather all nations for themselves, and collect all peoples as their own.

prayer of dedication of Our tithes and offerings

Please consider mailing your offering to the church.

Send offerings to

(Based on Galatians 5:1, 13-26)

God of wisdom and all good gifts: We bring our tithes and offerings to your altar, remembering that, like Abraham, you have blessed us to be a blessing to others. Remind us this morning that the gift of freedom that comes to Christ is also a gift not to be kept but to be shared. May the way we live and the way we give reflect that our freedom in Christ. In His blessed name, we pray. Amen.
